  • Transitions : Crib to Big Kid Bed

Knowing when to make the switch to a Big Kid bed and how to make that switch are two things that if you google can lead you down tons of different paths and leave you more confused then when you started. As a professional sleep consultant I will not only give you the confidence to know when to switch your child but also how to in a way that promotes the best success.

The right time to make a switch is different for each child so there are a few things you will want to look for so you know when it is that time for your little one. First check your child’s height. This is one that is the most often missed but is very important for your little one’s safety. Most cribs have a maximum height of 35” make sure you check your crib to see what its maximum height is. Once they reach the max height it is time to move them out. It is no longer safe for them and something as little as leaning on the crib can turn into a fall.

If your child is under the maximum height requirements but crawls out then it is time for a big kid bed. If you are adamant that you want them to stay in a crib you can use a sleepsack to restrict leg movement but if they crawl out again you must move them to keep them safe.

So now that you have determined it is time for a big kid bed let’s learn how to make the switch.

1- Determine what bed they will be in.

If they are under the age of 2 the only type of mattress that is safe is a crib mattress so use a toddler bed. Remember not to use bedrails on toddler beds besides the one they came with. It is a safety risk.

If your child is 2 or older then an adult mattress is now safe for them. Adult mattresses have only been tested on children 2 and over. I suggest using an adult mattress if you have the choice.

Use a bed frame. A bed frame will create a bit more distance for your child and discourage them from getting out of their bed. If you are using an adult mattress you can use bed rails to prevent falling out.

2- Keep your child in the loop.

Explain to them that they are getting a new big kid bed. You can let them pick out a new sheet with a fun character on their bed, and a lovey or blanket if they are at the age that it is safe to do so (over 15 months and not in a crib for blankets and loveys, over 2 and out of a crib for pillows)

    3- Set ground rules

Tell your little one what you expect of them when they are going to their own big kid bed. Tell them that you expect them to stay in their bed all night and not get out.

    4- stay consistent

This is the most important step to having an easy transition. Don’t let your child bed whatever rules you have in place or it will soon turn into a game of stalling bedtime. Make sure both parents have the same expectations and both stay consistent to it. If the rules aren’t followed, consequence.

When you move your toddler to a big kid bed there is often a “honeymoon” phase where they love their bed and stay in it no problem but often on week 2 or 3 they realise they can get out and play with their toys or explore their room. We want this phase to be as short as possible so make sure you stick to your rules.

Remember to praise your child for staying in their bed the whole night. Positive words go a long way for our children and encourage that good behavior to stay.
